What a BIG birthday!

Well, Davis' 8th birthday has come to a close. What a big birthday it was. He was spoiled, but I guess this only happens a few times in one's lifetime that you hit a major milestone, so it was fun to spread it out and soak it up.

Birthday fun started with a sleepover at Grandma and Grandpa Vellinga's, and Grandma and Kristen took Davis and his friend Bryson to Boondocks in Kaysville. After 5 hours, I was really starting to worry what had happened to them. But then in walked one very tired Grandma and one VERY excited boy. I guess the Bumper Boats, Laser Tag, Go Karts, arcade games, pizza, and miniature golf was a hit. Thank heavens for an unlimited pass, right Mom? Davis said it was the BEST present ever.

On Davis' birthday, we made his requested Dinner....breakfast. Eggs, grits with cheese, Cinnamon stackups and sausage. Then it was a couple of presents and pictures with his new, VERY COOL bike, that we actually gave him a month ago so he could enjoy it before the weather turned cold. I felt bad that the celebration was so quick, so we went on a family bike ride in honor of his new bike. Then it was back home for cake and ice-cream. Oh, and I made brownies for his school class earlier that day. By this point I'm thinking we've all had WAY too much sugar.

On Friday the 22nd, we had a birthday party with Davis' friends. I do not do parties every year; I told my kids they get one when they turn 5, 8, 12, and 16. I was SO brilliant that I didn't realize that this year Davis will get a party and so will Claire. I also told Davis when he turned five that he could have 5 people, him and 4 friends. So of course, this year Davis remembers this and says, "I get to invite 8 people, right?" Hmm....how do I get out of this? I can't, so out go 7 invitations, and they ALL come. But it actually went way better than I thought it would. We had a "late-night" party (in lieu of a sleepover). Pizza, treasure hunt, bobbing for apples and build your own banana splits. The boys loved everything. It didn't really seem like we had 8 boys running around our house. Then it was presents, and a movie. Davis wanted to watch the new Karate Kid. DID YOU KNOW THAT MOVIE IS 2 1/2 HOURS LONG? WHAT FAMILY MOVIE IS THAT LONG??? Needless to say, after 1/2 hour, all the boys were bored of the movie and spent the next 2 hours eating goody bag candy, pretending they knew Karate, making a Haunted House in our toy room, spitting out Jr. Mints into the carpet because they were "gross", etc. They all came back to the TV for the final fight tournament the last 15 minutes of the movie and proclaimed it was the BEST movie ever! And then Dave and I hurried to take them all home at 10:30 at night, wondering what their parents must be thinking of us. But the next day, all I heard was, "That was the best party ever!" Good job us, I guess.

Next comes Cub Scouts. Hurray! Since I am the den leader for the Wolves, this is really fun for me. I love having the 8 year olds; they are so excited about everything. They think scouts is wonderful and fun and cool and just when they start to lose that attitude, they move to the Bears. Great for me! Since I've been involved with Cub Scouts since Davis was 3, he is thrilled to actually get to make the crafts and eat the treats that are around my house before den and pack meetings.

The final event to this birthday was his Baptism last Friday. What a marvelous experience. It went so smooth, thanks everyone for the help. We decided to do it in Utah so that our families could come, rather than have everyone drive up to Idaho. It went great. Thanks Dad and Tom for extra special talks, thanks Kris for the piano playing, thanks Grandpa for the arranging, and thanks everyone for coming.

But mostly, thanks to Dave for being a worthy father and a big I Love You to my big boy. I didn't get as emotional as I thought I would; I just saw a future missionary and I got so excited for him. I wanted to show you the baptism program I made. When I thought about the baptism of my first baby, this picture came immediately to mind. I had to use it.

Come, little child, and together we’ll learn

Of his commandments, that we may return

Home to his presence, to live in his sight

Always, always to walk in the light.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe how grown up Davis is. I almost didn't recognize him in the pictures. Crazy how fast time goes. He really will be a little missionary before you know it!

Awesome job on the party! I'm totally using the 5,8,12, and 16 birthday party rule.

Congratulations Davis! I can't believe he's already 8! Sounds like a very fun party and birthday events all around.

Wow, 8 years old. Seriously, where has the time gone! It was just yesterday that we moved to Clinton and sat in front of the Cox's with little Davis (or not so little). But, then it feels like I've known you forever. What a special time for your family. I love the "late night" party idea. So fun!
